A work of acute sincerity and an ode to spiritual survival, with ‘Gli Spiriti Della Marca’, Italian artist Carlo Giustini delivers his most earnest outing to date, comprised of four sonic meditations that were created in isolation during the height of the Covid-19 crisis in Treviso, Italy.

By only using a rudimentary set of instruments and recording techniques, Giustini was able to channel a sense of timeworn yet reconciling familiarity through his work, interweaving bleached tape loops with the wistful sounds of unperturbed domestic life.

Reality fell into a slumber,  upon waking, it stumbled loudly.

The old, familiar voice of dust returned to sing. 

These are days suspended in time, suspended in smoke.

A reverie, an acquainted painting, worn and creased by the whistle of our factories.

We found ourselves confined in a thought, entombed in a home.

Traditions, the ancient ones, they still give us comfort.

 Like spectres we wander in our houses, indefinitely at ease.

have yet to translate the song titles so the artist's intentions are somewhat of a mystery to me, but the wavering surface noise creates the theme of a dialogue between music & technology before becoming invisible to my ears. this conjures memories of listening to music as a child (long before the sterility of digital media), when i rarely took notice of the hiss & pops of records, 8-tracks, tapes, & am radio because they were a normal, necessary aspect of recorded sound. nice to be back again.
